A little about our town Rockhampton: Situated approximately 600 kilometres north of Brisbane is the ‘Beef Capital of Australia,’ Rockhampton. Placed on the banks of the Fitzroy River, the city has a population of more than 61,700 residents, and experiences more than 300 days of sunshine each year. This in turn, attracts much tourism and a substantial number of governmental and major business events each year.
Rockhampton and the surrounding Capricorn district is the traditional home of the Darumbal Aboriginal people.
Charles and William Archer were the early European settlers to seek grazing land around the Capricorn Coast. Earlier expeditions however, were made by Thomas Mitchell and Ludwig Leichhardt, who discovered the region in 1844 and 1846. They made note of valuable grazing land, which gave the Archer brothers their information.
The New South Wales Government decreed Leichhardt and Port Curtis as two new districts in 1854, which brought about an influx of new settlers. Shipping supplies were made easier by the presence of the Fitzroy River, and a small settlement began to take shape alongside a rock barrier which stopped extra navigation upstream. Because of these rocks, the name of ‘Rockhampton’ was implemented.
The first of numerous skirmishes with the local Aboriginals occurred in 1856, when Philip Elliott and a party of settlers apparently came under attack by the Taroomball tribe of the Darumbal Aboriginals. After Elliott was seriously wounded and one of his men killed, the Aboriginals were dispersed by a contingent of native police.
The Rockhampton region continued to develop rapidly with abundant grazing lands rich with waters from the Fitzroy River and its various tributaries. When gold was discovered at Canoona, the Fitzroy River was used by miners on their way to their diggings, utilising Rockhampton town as their port. When the gold finds became further and further apart, many gold miners were left stranded at Rockhampton.
By 1861, the town was home to banks, a court house, School of Arts, and a regular newspaper. However, in the 1880s, a major gold deposit was discovered southwest of Rockhampton at Mount Morgan, and from then on, the town of Rockhampton became the key port to channel the shipments of gold.
In 1902, the City of Rockhampton was declared, with a rail line to Brisbane completed by 1903.
